bigoted statements or other hate filled speech in public forums.

  • Above the Law Legal Blog: In a July 10th 2009 posting,
the Above the Law legal blog covered a story of a 13 year old Polish girl who
was impregnated during a Egyptian vacation.  Apparently, the young girl was afraid
to tell her mother that she was sexually active or raped.  She concocted a story
that she was impregnated in a crowded pool.  The mother made a formal
complaint to the Tourism Board.  I agreed with ATL, the mother was naive.
Editor Kasmir Hill took the opportunity to comment  that she no longer felt
bad about telling "dumb Polack jokes."  Apparently the editors may have felt
they went a little too far.  They followed the statement with a disclaimer that
they do not condone racial or ethnic slurs.  Apparently if you follow your
first statement with a second statement that says you do not condone your
first statement, it doesn't count.  Did I get that right?  Judging by the dip
in readership during Bax Exam dates, it appears most of the blogs readers
are law students.  Although the editors are not practicing attorneys, we find it
shameful that a website that caters to future lawyers would make ethnic slurs.
To date, the statements remain on the blog and no apology has ever
been made.  We support ATL's right to free speech.  Of course, we also
support common sense and decency.  Ethnic slurs are derogatory and childish.
We expect more from our lawyers.  Even the ones who do not actually practice.

  • David Langlieb, a New York City Parks Department Employee published an
article in the Haverford College alumni magazine that uses stereotypes to describe
Greenpoint's Polish community.  In the magazine's "Moved to Speak" column, he describes
Greenpoint as a community with several problems, including "the high density of Polish
people infesting its rowhouses." He describes Greenpoint's business district as "even uglier
than the morons who work there."  Many failed to see the humor in Mr. Langlieb's
comparison of Poles to vermin.  The president of Haverford College, the New York City's
Park Department issued statements deriding the article.  Langlieb, who apparently lives in
    Greenpoint, apologized.

  • Senator Arlen Specter: During a meeting of the Pennsylvania Republican
group the Commonwealth Club, Senator Arlen Specter asked if anyone in the crowd at New
York's Rainbow Room was Polish.  Despite ten people raising their hands, Specter decided
to let loose with a slew of tasteless Polish jokes.  The Senator eventually apologized and
switched parties. Not surprising considering the large Polish population in PA.
